Worship
The word liturgy is derived from the Greek ΛΣΤΟΨργια (leitourgia) which means "public work." In the Greek city-states this referred to a "public good work" that a wealthy citizen arranged at his own expense, either voluntarily or at the command of the government.
Such energy around the good works of God's people might just revolutionize our lives on this planet!
Liturgy exists everywhere, regardless of religion or denomination, whether formal or free, atheist or agnostic, in the sanctuary or on the football field. The "work of a people" is a living demonstration of who people are, what is important to them, and what they hold dear.
As a people of God, our work - our liturgy - is that communal activity which is in response to the Sacred, the universally True, and Life Giving. Our work is a living, breathing, ever-growing drama that we act out together on a weekly basis, and individually within our homes and communities.
The gathered people of God are not spectators who come to be entertained, or to watch as the professional folks do what they have been hired to do. The Creator is the audience, God's people the actors, and those who stand before you to facilitate are merely prompters to help the drama along. It is from this common understanding that your staff and leadership have been and now more deeply desire to craft and lead our weekly experiences.
The gifts among us are many. There are numerous opportunities - not for performance, but for a larger number of us to participate more fully in something that is already alive, already at work, already known as a gathering of love and grace. Your staff and leadership look forward to hearing from you as you contemplate how you might support the "liturgical life" of this community. Come join us as we worship together.
